“Starring’s music swirls around the neo-psychedelic sound of an old electric organ and cranked-up, distorted lead guitar. The Minimalism of early Terry Riley and Philip Glass, the splashiness of Sun Ra, the drones of the Velvet Underground and the motoric repetition and expanding rhythms of Neu! and Can all echo in Starring’s pieces, which also make way, now and then, for Clara Hunter’s gentle voice offering a few lines of inexplicable lyrics: “After all the lasers, I forgot the law.” It’s an album of frenetic enigmas. - Jon Pereles, New York Times

“The band is nearly as omnivorous as King Crimson when it comes to genre, and just as good at making all the bits fit together: I think I’m picking up Deep Purple, the MC5, Sonic Youth, Soft Machine, and Devo, all sitting together on the same plate so that everybody’s sauce leaks into everybody’s meat. It’s a heady and beautiful blend.” – The Chicago Reader

(Thrill Jockey Records)
Guardian Alien is a free wheeling ensemble coming into its own, having found just the right balance between structured arrangements and wild abandon. Helmed by Greg Fox, who has lent his percussive force to the likes of Teeth Mountain, Dan Deacon, and Liturgy, the ensemble was initially an extension of his solo music (GDFX). It rapidly took on its own identity and expanded to a core group of Greg (drums, vocals, electronics, arrangements), Alex Drewchin (vocals, synth), Turner Williams Jr. (shahai baaja), Bernard Gann (guitar and also of Liturgy), and Eli Winograd (bass), all of whom have lent their expansive talents to numerous other projects.

Starring’s debut album, Wife Of God, begins with billowing smoke clouds of reverberating psych-rock dread and only gets rougher from there. Pterodactyl drummer Matt Marlin and Skeleton$ keyboardist Mike Gallope body-slam their respective instruments and create the most recognizable noises among the bunch, leading the Brooklyn five-piece through a vocal-wrenching, music-blurring wind tunnel. Some may call it “psych-rock” or “prog,” but all the mind-shattering noise makes it difficult to determine the effects on the psyche, and the mashed-up vocal howls obscure any technical proficiency.more at
